ZION NATIONAL PARK EBOOK

I designed this eBook in my Layout & Typography class at MSUM for our final project. I utilized “Greater Zion’s” website for learning purposes to practice sticking to a brand identity. This was the first time we used PDF interactivity in InDesign in this class. I made an eBook for another graphic design class the year prior, but I’m happier with this one because I chose the prompt. The buttons at the top are all interactive and guide you to each page. Below, you can find the buttons on the right hand side for a unique placement that is consistent through the rest of the PDF.

Above, is the “Wildlife” page. This page showcases some of the wildlife that can be seen in Zion. Clicking on each animal triggers the show-hide functionality so the viewer can read a short paragraph about each animal.

I struggled a little bit with the show-hide functionality because I wanted the click-able area to be larger so if you miss the animal a bit, you can still view the info. This caused some issues because the larger boxes were overlapping with each other, so if you clicked on the owl, it would show info about the lizard. I ended up opting for a smaller box to avoid any overlap or issues.

The “Discover Trails” page uses hovering with the show-hide functionality. You can hover over each region to showcase a few popular trails for horseback riding, ATV driving, biking and hiking. The process to create this map was a bit complicated, as I dropped in a photo of the map from the internet, and traced over it with the pen tool. I’m very happy with this page.

The “What to Bring” page was a bit complicated. I originally wanted the show-hide to be triggered by hovering, but it would show the wrong info, or get stuck on some info, even if I triple-checked that everything else would be hidden when hovering over the compass, for example. I ended up choosing to make everything clickable to avoid any technical issues for the viewer. While I might know what it’s supposed to do, or look like, and I know that its a technical problem, the viewer might not.

Above is the “Plan Your Visit” page which has all of the contact information for the “Greater Zion” company that I pulled info from. The facebook and instagram icons are clickable and redirect you to those pages. Over all, this was a great learning experience, and I understand PDF interactivity more now.
